East Coast Literary Awards

Project Description

The East Coast Literary Awards are a collection of prizes administered by the Writers' Federation of Nova Scotia. The Awards were previously the WFNS Literary Awards, which was a cumbersome name. In 2014, the decision was made to solidify the Awards as their own distinct piece of programming, which meant creating branding and a visual identity.
The only piece of visual identity the WFNS had when I began was the organizational logo. In the creation of the ECLA logo, I decided to keep it stark black and white to tie it visually to the main logo.
The shortlist poster consists of three colour blocks that change each year. The colour for each of the three categories is chosen year to year based on the most common colour present in all three covers. This tri-colour block design allows the branding to refresh every year while maintaining a distinct visual identity. The tri-colours carry over into event posters, shortlist posters, signage, social media images and decor at the event itself.

I was the first employee of WFNS in many years with graphic design abilities. There was no visual identity to any of the programs, and the only piece of branding was the logo.
